The Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer were two of the first vehicles to help popularize the modern SUV era. Both remain competitive options in the midsize class. However, the fifth-gen Grand Cherokee presents a more compelling package than the sixth-gen Explorer, with more refined accommodations and styling, exclusive tech options, and more utility. But you don’t have to take our word for it.

This past May, MotorTrend compared the three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L with the Ford Explorer1, asserting that the Grand Cherokee is “the clear choice” and the “better-executed product.” Here’s a quick look at a few ways the Jeep Grand Cherokee L outshines the Ford Explorer.
- The Jeep Grand Cherokee L can tow more than most midsize three-row crossovers. Models with the 3.6-liter V-6 (290 horsepower, 257 pound-feet of torque) can tow up to 6,200 pounds when properly equipped, while the 5.7-liter V-8 boosts the trailer rating to 7,200 pounds. The Ford Explorer’s 5,600-pound tow rating exceeds the segment average (5,000) but doesn’t come close to the Grand Cherokee L’s capability.
- Both models come standard with advanced safety tech like forward collision mitigation, blind-spot/rear traffic monitoring, and lane-keep assist. However, the Grand Cherokee L’s base trim also includes Adaptive Cruise Control w/Stop & Go. The Explorer reserves this feature for higher trims and packages.
- The 2024 Grand Cherokee L comes standard with a fully digital 10.25-inch gauge cluster and an 8.4-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The 2024 Explorer’s standard 8.0-inch touchscreen still uses Ford’s last-gen SYNC 3 system and doesn’t offer wireless smartphone integration. Grand Cherokee Limited and higher trims use a 10.1-inch touchscreen. The Explorer offers a similar display, but it isn’t standard on any trim.
- The Grand Cherokee can augment your Aurora adventures with technologies like a 10-inch head-up display, Night Vision, an Active Driving Assist System, and an automated parking system. It also offers an available class-exclusive 10.25-inch front-passenger touchscreen. You won’t find tech like that in the Explorer.
- Solon shoppers can configure the Jeep Grand Cherokee L to deluxe levels of luxury with attributes premium leather, genuine open-pore wood, and amenities like heated/ventilated front and rear seats, four-zone automatic climate control, and a 19-speaker McIntosh high-end audio system. The Explorer offers a few luxuries of its own, but it can’t match the Grand Cherokee L’s overall refinement.
